Alpha is a measure of performance on a risk-adjusted basis. Alpha takes the volatility (price risk) of a mutual fund and compares its risk adjusted performance to a benchmark index. The excess return of the fund relative to the return of the benchmark index is a fund’s alpha.

Beta is a measure of the volatility, or systematic risk, of a security or a portfolio in comparison to the market as a whole. Beta is used in the capital asset pricing model (CAPM), which calculates the expected return of an asset based on its beta and expected market returns.

A Put Option is a contract giving the owner the right, but not the obligation, to sell a specified amount of an underlying security at a specified price within a specified time.

Pricing Power is an economic term referring to the effect that a change in a firm’s product price has on the quality demanded of that product.

Profit Margin Improvement means increasing the amount of profit made from the sale of a product. If costs rise and the dollar amount of sales remains the same, the margin will decrease; if costs decline and the dollar amount of sales remains the same, the margin goes up.

Credit Quality is one of the principal criteria for judging the investment quality of a bond or bond mutual fund. As the term implies, credit quality informs investors of a bond or bond portfolio’s credit worthiness or risk of default.
