The Federal Reserve System is the central bank of the United States. The Fed, as it is commonly known, regulates the U.S. monetary and financial system.

Quantitative easing (QE) is an unconventional monetary policy in which a central bank purchases government securities or other securities from the market in order to lower interest rates and increase the money supply.

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which eliminated most tariffs on trade between Mexico, Canada, and the United States, went into effect on Jan. 1, 1994. NAFTA’s purpose is to encourage economic activity between North America’s three major economic powers.

The velocity of money is the rate at which people spend money. The velocity of money is usually measured as a ratio of gross national product (GNP) to a country’s total supply of money.

Deleveraging is when a company or individual attempts to decrease its total financial leverage.

Basis point refers to a common unit of measure for interest rates and other percentages in finance. One basis point is equal to 1/100th of 1%, or 0.01% (0.0001), and is used to denote the percentage change in a financial instrument.

Gross domestic product (GDP) is the monetary value of all the finished goods and services produced within a country’s borders in a specific time period.
